This year, Ludwig van Beethoven's epochal masterpiece celebrates its 200th anniversary: on 7 May 1824, the 9th Symphony was heard in public for the first time without the composer himself ever having heard it - due to his advanced deafness. Since then, music lovers have become so aware of the work that every performance becomes an event even before the first note is played.
