New 5-star guest rooms with individual storys

The Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern has a remarkable history and cherishes its traditions. Nevertheless, it lives firmly in the present and is planning major renovations over the next year and a half. The Schweizerhof has made a name for itself as the Festival Hotel at the heart of Lucerne that epitomises artistic Zeitgeist, and in future this will also be reflected in the ambience of the 101 guest rooms. At an investment cost of around CHF 10 million, the interior decoration of all these rooms is to be revolutionised.

All rooms will get the design of this first new room

In future, the guest rooms at the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern will be telling stories – maybe not from the 1001 Nights, but at least 101 individual stories about famous people of the past and present (great philosophers, artists, actors, athletes, musicians or royalty) who once stayed at the hotel. In this way, history will come alive.

Total renovation of all guest rooms
Over the next 15 months, all 101 guest rooms are to be completely refurbished and renovated. The 52 rooms in the east wing will be renovated between January and April 2013. Renovation of the other 49 rooms (in the main building) will be carried out between January and April 2014. For these renovations, the Schweizerhof has adopted a completely new concept, whereby its status as the Festival Hotel (Blue Balls Festival, Lucerne Blues Festival, Zaubersee - Russian Music Lucerne, World Band Festival, Retro Festival and many other events) will be reflected in every guest room. However, the new design of these rooms is only part of the overall concept: the plan is for the guest rooms also to tell stories about the visits of famous people such as writers, musicians or actors to the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern. Guests could read these, for example, on the writing desk in their room and, at the same time, discover further elements of the 101 stories and/or legends surrounding these personalities from various quotes, objects or writings. Each guest room will thus bear a different “thumbprint”. Hotel Director Clemens Hunziker says: “Not only will we be able to offer beautiful rooms with a unique ambience and 5-star-plus infrastructure, but also an individual experience for each guest. Naturally, it is up to our guests to decide how far they want to venture down this cultural path.”
This major project is being realised by the winning tenderer LIGNO in-Raum AG at an investment cost of around CHF 10 million.

Regular investment in renovation
Ever since it opened in 1845, the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern has kept up with the times without, however, neglecting its historical and national image – as can be seen when looking at the 19th-century facade. Thanks to regular renovation work, this neo-Renaissance building today boasts an ultramodern infrastructure with trendsetting amenities. The last complete renovation took place from 1998 to 1999, when, at a cost of about CHF 40 million, the entire building was renovated and new parking facilities provided. Since then, considerable investments have been made every two years to keep the Schweizerhof’s amenities completely up to date. For example, the large hall was renovated in 2004, while the bar was redesigned in 2006 and the restaurant in 2006. Then, in 2010, a wellness and beauty complex was installed on the top floor of the main building.
Apart from major renovations, a number of smaller improvements are made every year to meet the needs of our guests, such as in our seminar rooms, reception area, business corner, range of TV programmes, etc.

Hotel still owned by the Hauser family, now in its 5th generation
The Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern has one of the longest and richest histories in Central Switzerland. Ever since it opened almost 170 years ago, it has been one of the most important landmarks in the city of Lucerne. During all this time, the hotel has both experienced and written history. As its director Clemens Hunziker says: “Some of our Schweizerhof guests live on within its walls, while future guests will enrich its heritage with their presence.” Thanks to its majestic location, the hotel enjoys a breathtaking view over Lake Lucerne with the imposing peaks of the Alps in the distance. The Hotel Schweizerhof is situated in the middle of the historic old town and is only 5 minutes‘ walk away from the famous Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre.

The Festival Hotel is managed by the 5th generation of the Hauser family, who have always taken great care to preserve its friendly charm. And it is this charm that brings guests from all over the world back to Lucerne – again and again. Not only can they enjoy the here and now to their hearts’ content – they will also be able to discover the history of the hotel and its illustrious guests.
